About Us

Who We Are

We’re fondly known as ‘Photo Akkas’—a name that truly reflects the spirit of our collective. What began as a small space to share work opportunities has grown into a community of young and emerging women and non-binary lens-based artists across India.

For us, it’s all about growing together and lifting each other up—and that’s what makes this community so special. It’s a space built on mutual support, creativity, and a shared purpose: amplifying the voices of women and non-binary artists in photography and cinema. In an industry where men have long had the spotlight, we’re working towards creating a more balanced and equitable space for everyone.

This initiative is founded by Gayatri Nair—an inspiring art educator and co-founder of the Chennai Photo Biennale Foundation.

Our aim is to

Build a safe and supportive community for the artists

Amplify their presence in the field of Photography and Film
